How to Build a Skincare Formula Around Multiple Active Ingredients

Adding more active ingredients does not automatically create a better skincare formula.

A successful multi-active formula is a balanced system.

This article covers formula architecture – how actives are organised. If you are still choosing which actives to use at all, start with how to choose active ingredients for a skincare formula.

01 Choose the Primary Active

Start with the main product objective.

For example:

Brightening Serum→ Brightening-Focused Active
Firming Serum→ Firming-Focused Active

One primary active keeps the product’s story and its formula pointing the same direction. Ingredient profiles for common actives are covered in peptides, vitamin C, niacinamide and ceramides.

02 Add Supporting Actives

Supporting ingredients should have a clear purpose.

They may support:

  • The primary active
  • Skin conditioning
  • Texture
  • Overall product positioning

If a supporting active cannot be assigned one of these roles, it is usually decoration.

03 Check Compatibility

R&D needs to consider:

  • pH
  • Solubility
  • Stability
  • Processing
  • Ingredient interaction

This is where multi-active concepts most often fail. Two actives that are individually stable may interact in a single base, and the effect usually appears in stability testing rather than in the first sample – see stability testing before launch.

04 Consider Texture

A technically sophisticated formula still needs a good consumer experience.

High active loading can change viscosity, absorption and finish. The format decision therefore has to respond to the formula rather than being fixed in advance – see how to choose the right product format.

05 Match Packaging

Formula and packaging should be evaluated together.

Sensitive actives are the usual reason for a protection-oriented component, as described in skincare packaging compatibility.

06 Keep the Claims Focused

A formula can contain multiple actives without turning the product story into a list of ten unrelated benefits.

The claim discipline behind this is covered in skincare claims before launch.

A Better Formula Architecture

Primary Active→ Supporting Actives→ Base + Texture→ Stability→ Packaging→ Claims

This is more effective than simply adding popular ingredients one after another.

Final Thoughts

The question is not how many actives a formula contains, but whether each one has a job.
